Excluding items from search results

Hello. Would anyone no if it possible to exclude a word from a search.

I know for example on eBay that you just put a dash or minus sign in front
of a word and any search will not return a result that has that word in it.
eg. mary -waters will return only results with "mary" but no results that had "waters" in it.

Im not sure of the intricies of the search function, I guess give it a try and report back
