The purpose of this post is to let those members who use VLC Media Player of an update. The update to VLC Media Player was released today, is version, 0.8.bc. This update is supposed to fix unspecified bugs. The file is 9.28MB. Depending on your connection speed should only take 10 minutes to download and install. I got mine from CNET, but I expect that it is available from other download sites as well.

rainman, can you tell us does the new player have the (Help box)still at the top of the player,or has it been taken away?............only you won't be able do your updates from the player itself in the future.

The latest version from the VideoLan site is 0.8.6e - it has the 'help' box, but this only provides the 'about' information no link for updating, which I presume you have to do by visiting the VideoLan site. Having said that the previous version I had did not have an automatic update facility.

Gentlemen, my original post was based upon an automated notification that I get from CNET,etc. on VLC and other programs. These alerts not only inform me about upgrades, but also, problems.

I thought that the caution symbol with the exclamation point would indicate
I was trying to provide information about its availability. Not, to install it without checking for more information, especially "fixes unspecified bugs" would indicate a need for more research.

The VLC version that I am using is working well, so I was in no rush to upgrade. Prior to installation, I usually go to CNET for any information about the update. As of now, I have not done so, nor have I received any alerts on VLC.

I follow a simple philosophy when it comes to upgrading or changing software that comes from years of experience, IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T "FIX" IT. Occaissonally, I forget or ignore it and suffer the consequences(2 total system restores in the last 6 months). As I have mentioned in a number of posts, I advise that BEFORE installation of any new program or update that research is necessary.

I apologize to any of you that downloaded and installed the update and are now experiencing problems. Hopefully, you still have the original version and/or you can do a software restore.

I agree with this statement of your...although I usually go with "Caveat Emptor", 'let the buyer beware'.

I use VLC, too...but, see no need for an update...and, with this warning, I am gonna hold off until I need one.
