About Blaze Starr:
Blaze Starr was one of ten children born in Twelevepole West Virginia. She left home to pursue a singing career heading for Washington D.C.
While working as a hat check girl she was 'discovered' (38DD-24-37, 5'/6" - 112 Lbs) by a friend and she suggested a stripping career
Thus ended up in Burlesque house's instead. Billed as 'the Hottest Blaze in Burlesque' and' Miss Spontaneous Combustion' due to due to her bright red hair and the audience roar when she would remove her top.
1958-1960:
She had a infamous affair with Earl K. Long, who was the governor of Louisiana during their relationship, which lasts until he dies in 1960.
They were making plans to marry when his wife had him committed to an asylum, he died before any nuptials took place to Blaze, she was heart broken.
1960:
Blaze Starr sleeps with John F. Kennedy, New Orleans.
Miss Starr had a couch that was rigged to flame and smolder as she would sit and perform her act.
Another of Miss Starr's acts included a large black panther that would eat his dinner of tasty morsels of raw meat strung about her bikini and body as she lay on the stage in an acted ecstasy but when the panther died, Blaze would change the act and portray a panther to the audience while dancing.
Blaze only made one movie during her career as a burlesque star entitled 'Blaze Starr Goes Nudist' in 1962. Blaze had a cousin who made it famous as a country western star named Molly O' Day.
Most people will remember the character of Blaze Starr from the 1989 Paul Newman film Blaze based, in part, by the real life of Starr.
The story is that of the stripper, played by Lolita Davidovich, and the eccentric governor who falls for her. It's an intriguing look at how society looked at burlesque performers and how the golden age of stripping changed from the bump-and-grind of the 50's to the go-go 60's.
Starr, herself, was born in West Virginia and was discovered while working as a hat check girl in Baltimore. Starr, like most in the pantheon of classic strippers, had a meteoric rise with a act that consisted of her playing a jungle drum set and doing a exotic dance to go with it.
She spent most of her career working on the east coast and earned the nickname "the Hottest Blaze in Burlesque." She photographed with famed fetish photographer Irving Klaw and could be found frequently in the pages of men's magazines. She also starred in one of the most popular nudie-cutie flicks ever, the 1960 "Blaze Starr Goes Nudist."

About: Blaze and Governor Earl K. Long
Back in the 1950's, Blaze Starr, a stripper from West Virginia became well known throughout the United States. Aside from her burlesque dancing, her affair with the Governor of the great state of Louisiana escalated her popularity. I chose the time period when Blaze Starr met and became involved with Governor Earl K Long because of the controversy it caused and the exciting events that surrounded the late 1950's.
When Blaze Starr first met Governor Long in 1958, her first feeling was fear. She was afraid she was going to jail when the Governor of Louisiana walked in escorted by the police during a provocative dance. When the Governor and his escorts gave Blaze a standing ovation, she was dumbfounded. Blaze had never known a politician who entered a show bar for any reason other than to cause the dancers trouble. After her performance, the Governor requested her presence at his table. They became friends. Their relationship quickly grew into a love affair. Soon their relationship was put under the spotlight. Coworkers, reporters, and voters alike knew of the affair. Mrs. Blanche Long made her position clear when she convinced the hospital staff Earl was crazy and had him committed. She thought this would convince Earl to end the affair with Blaze. The affair continued until the day Earl died in 1960.
I enjoyed learning about Blaze Starr. Her life was exciting and full of adventures. I learned that in the 1950's, stripping was more of an art form instead of women taking off their clothes to solicit men into bed. Blaze was close to her family. She showed them respect by trying to shade their images of her newfound career. Blaze met her perfect match when she met Earl. He accepted her life style and she accepted his. They fulfilled each other's needs for companionship, compassion, and love. This is something most people wait a lifetime to find and some never do.

JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Mamma,
Yesterday I met Governor Earl Long while I was at work. When he came in
with all of those police escorts, I was scared. I thought I was going to
jail again. I remember those iron bars, concrete walls, and cold drafts too
well. The people that I shared a cell with were murders, gangsters, and
thieves. They tried to beat me up. I never want to go back again. When the
Governor gave me a standing ovation, I was pleasantly surprised. Finally I
have found a city where I can perform without worrying about run-ins with the
police.
After my act, he requested my presence at his table. We were introduced,
we talked, and he invited me to his dinner party at the Roosevelt hotel. This
hotel is so high class, one weeks pay won't pay for one nights stay. I am
worried. What will I wear? Will it be to revealing? Will I end up in the
same situation as I was with Red? How will I act in front of his political
guests? Why does he want me there anyway? I am very flattered that he
invited me, but I don't know how to act in front of his politically correct
friends. What if I do something wrong to embarrass him and myself? I told
him I would go. I like him very much. He acts like he has no care in the
world. I wish I felt like that. Actually, when I am with him I do.
Something magical draws me toward him. Do you think I should go? I know I
want to go, but I am afraid.
Love,
Fannie

Blaze's long term goal was marrying Earl. The proposal was put on hold

JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Journal,
My dreams of becoming famous, dancing on Bourbon Street, and becoming
involved with the Governor of Louisiana are all coming true. All the girls
want to dance on Bourbon Street because of the generous rich men who visit
here nightly. I love it here. The eager boys from the Navy, the men who
need a break from the everyday, and the lonely old men who need a thrill come
in just to see me. I make them happy, and they don't mind showing me just
how happy I make them either. One old man tipped me over five hundred
dollars after one show. I guess some men just don't have anyone to spend
their money on, or nobody they want to spend it on. I love the money, but
the attention and applause are what makes my heart pound.
When I met Earl, he seemed to be an average crazy old man. His
enthusiasm grabbed me. He was passionate about everything he did. He wasn't
like any other man I ever met, he told me the truth. Other guys that I have
gone out with have tried to read me. They wanted to be what they thought I
wanted them to be instead of just being themselves. When he told me he
couldn't be trusted, I just laughed. Earl is something special.
In that busy club last night, with all of his friends sitting around the
table, he asked me to marry him. He showed me he is not ashamed of me or
embarrassed by me. I can't wait until the day he leaves Blanche to marry me.
I know she will find out and be furious that a stripper from West Virginia
is taking a husband away from a high-class woman like her. Earl won't care
how mad she gets because he doesn't love her anyway. He loves me. I dream
of the day when we will have a fairy tale wedding and live happily ever after.

JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Journal,
I have traveled all over the country and become a success. It hasn't
been easy. I deal with many pressures every day. My weight, my complexion,
my hair, and most important my eyelashes have to be perfect. I have to watch
my figure very closely all the time. If I eat too much, I gain weight. No
one wants to see a fat girl dance. If I don't eat enough, then I lose
weight. Most girls do not worry about that, but in this business I count on
my breasts for my tips and the first place I lose weight is in my chest.
Every night I wash my face twice and use an overnight moisturizer to keep my
skin looking young and smooth. I brush my hair one hundred strokes to keep
it at its shiniest. I spend at least twenty minutes everyday making sure my
eyelashes are in place and have the perfect amount of mascara on them with no
clumps. I work very hard to keep my body in its best condition.
I worry about new dances. Will they be a hit or will they flop? I worry
about getting old. What happens when my skin wrinkles and my breasts sag?
What will I do when nobody wants to see me dance anymore? How will I know
when it is time to stop? How much time do I have? Some of the other girls
do ***** to escape, but I keep my priorities straight and try not to let
everything bother me.

Collins, Glenn. "The Woman Behind the Movie About the Scandal." New York
Times. 14 Dec.1989:C15.
JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Journal,
There are many people out there who think because I am a stripper I am a
prostitute. I am a class act entertainer. I love to dance and perform in
front of a crowd. The reason I didn't tell my mother in the beginning was
because I was afraid of what everyone on twelve-pole creek would say. Those
old women would have told my Mama that the only reason I became a stripper
was because she was a bad mother. They would have said that I was a
prostitute and a disgrace. How could she let her daughter do such a thing,
sleeping with men for money? I know people talk and I didn't want my mother
to be degraded by the neighbors for something I chose to do. I don't do
anything wrong. I like making men happy, but I do not sleep with them for
money.
My mother has always been supportive of me no matter what I did. When
she told me she knew that I had been stripping for a long time before I told
her, I wasn't really surprised. Mama always knew what I was going to do
before I did it. I have always wondered if I disappointed her when I didn't
tell her the whole truth in the beginning.
I think of stripping as an art. Anyone can take off their clothes, but
its how I do it that keeps men coming back for more. I spend hours, days,
weeks, and even months planning new acts with scenes that haven't been tried
before. That is probably why I am so successful. Some of the other girls
are pretty, but when they take off their clothes, the applause fades. They
might strip for a couple of months, but they won't last. Men want to see a
show. I put my heart and soul into every dance, every act, and every show.
I love to entertain and that is why men love to watch me dance.

willing to give up everything." (160).
Bonnett Sellinger, Margie. "Past: Stripper Blaze Starr Recalls Her Affair
With The Governor." People. 18 Dec. 1989: 156-160.
JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Journal,
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Earl had not come in that
night when we first met. We would have never found each other. Who is to
say what might have happened? I could have met another man, quit stripping
because he wanted me to, and been stuck at home raising a half dozen kids. I
don't want kids because I would get fat, get stretch marks, and get saggy
breasts. I could not handle those sleepless nights, early mornings, and
revolving my days around naptime. I had enough of that when I helped my
mother with all of my siblings. I could have never met anyone. I would have
grown old alone never knowing what true love felt like.
I am falling in love with Earl. When we are together, my heart
races and my knees get weak. When we are apart, I count the seconds until we
meet again. One of the things I love about Earl is he doesn't try to change
me. He loves me for who I am. I'm still stripping and I don't want to stop.
He understands me. He knows I don't strip because I am looking for a man to
sleep with. I strip because I love to entertain. Earl is still in politics
and I accept that also. We are happy with each other's lives. The only
thing that I would like to change is the marriage between Earl and Blanche.
I would like them to get a divorce.
Earl has done one big thing for me that no one else ever has. He is
giving up his high-class friends who disapprove of our relationship, his
marriage, and his whole lifestyle just for me. I have never met anyone like
Earl who was so generous, kind, and loving.

me after the divorce." (160).
Bonnett Sellinger, Margie. "Past: Stripper Blaze Starr Recalls Her Affair
With The Governor." People. 18 Dec. 1989:156-160.
JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Journal,
It seems like I have waited forever. Earl says he loves me, but I need
more. Blanche has interfered one to many times. I thought that after she
broke down my door at the hotel, he would tell her they were finished and
leave her for good. No. He did make her leave the hotel room, but then he
went back home to the mansion to live with her that night. Why does he put
up with her? I know that his relationship with me could hurt his political
standing, but everyone knows we are dating on the side. He isn't even
discrete about it. We touch and kiss in front of everyone. I think that
voters would think worse of a man who has a wife and a mistress rather than
to be divorced and dating again.
Earl did promise to marry me after the divorce, but when will that be?
If he doesn't love me anymore, then I wish he would tell me. I'm insecure I
know, but how am I supposed to act? If I act like I don't care and don't
push the issue, then he won't get divorced. He is a man. If he can have his
cake and eat it too, he will!
Oh, maybe I am just worried for nothing. He has never lied to me before,
so I should trust him now. I should quit focusing on the negative and start
thinking about the positive. When we get married, the whole town will
attend. It will be the event of the year. My mother and father will be
there. All of my sisters will be bridesmaids, and all of my brothers will be
groomsmen. They will all be dressed in fancy dresses and suits. We will get
married in the rose garden when all of the flowers are in full bloom. It
will be magical.

7. Blaze wanted to be successful like Molly O' Day her cousin who had become
a big country star. (82).
Perry, Huey. Blaze Starr. Boston: Praeger Publishers, 1974.
JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Journal,
My cousin Molly O'Day used to sing country music for everyone in West
Virginia. She was discovered by a talent scout and a month later she moved
to Nashville, Tennessee. Even though I knew I couldn't sing like Molly, I
wanted to become famous so everyone would talk about me and my mother would
be proud. I practiced singing at the top of my lungs when I was alone. I
acted like I was in the spotlight and everyone was watching me.
I moved up north and when given the opportunity I jumped headfirst in to
showbusiness. I was given an opportunity to play guitar with a man named
Jonny Wise. When the crowd cheered for me, he became angry. Red, my manager
told me I would have to strip if I wanted to stay in showbusiness because he
could not afford to loose Jonny. I was so nervous. After my show I had more
cheers and applause than ever before. I practiced and worked hard so I could
improve my acts. I made new costumes and made up new acts. When I wrote my
mother, I told her I was an entertainer so she wouldn't have to face the
gossip of twelve-pole creek. I didn't like lying to her. The reason I
wanted to be famous was so she could be proud of me, not ashamed.
Last week was the first time I heard from Molly since I left West
Virginia. She wrote me a letter and said that my relationship with Earl made
the papers in Nashville. She had heard what a big success I had become and
wanted to come see a show. She said she was proud of me for becoming
successful and finding such a prominent man. Molly told me about all of the
people who tried to stand in her way on her road to success. She said to
follow my heart and live for myself. Don't let anyone or anything stand in
my way. Molly gave me her phone number and said if I ever needed anything to
call her. I wrote back and told her how much she had inspired me. If it
wasn't for her, I would still be back in West Virginia. I told her I loved
her and if she ever needed anything to call me.

8. When Blaze decided to have a relationship with the Governor, she knew this
could cause them both problems. She had no regrets even after everything
they had been through. (160).
Bonnett Sellinger, Margie. "Past: Stripper Blaze Starr Recalls Her Affair
With The Governor." People. 18 Dec. 1989:156-160.
JOURNAL ENTRY
Dear Journal,
I look back on my life and wonder what would have happened if I had made
other choices. If I would have never become a stripper would I still live in
West Virginia with a husband who mistreats me? What would have happened if I
would have been a little less bull headed? Most of all, what would have
happened if I wouldn't have met Earl? I believe in God and I believe there
are reasons for everything. There has to be one big master plan.
I fell hopelessly in love with Earl. I loved his salt and pepper hair,
his dreamy eyes, and those old boots he wore to bed. Governor or not, money
or no money, I didn't care. I loved everything about him. I felt like I was
worry free when I was with him. Nothing mattered. How will I live with out
him?
I know I have made mistakes throughout my life, but Earl wasn't one of
them. If I would have known what I was in for when I met Earl, I might have
changed it. What girl would want a life as a stripper, who falls in love
with a married a man whom she knows she will never marry? This strengthens
my beliefs in the fact everything happens for a reason. Maybe in my younger
years I would not have chosen this path, but in my golden years, I would not
change it either. Earl made my life full of warmth and excitement. I think
I did that for Earl as well, at least I hope I did. Now that Earl is dead, I
feel lonely. The heart and soul of my life are gone. What will I do without
him? I guess I can just go on. I will never forget him.

Dear Journal,
Today was so exciting. The Governor asked me to go out on a date with
him. I was so flattered. I remember the day I left West Virginia when Mama
told me never trust a man who says trust me. So I asked him. All I could do
was laugh when he said, "hell no!" I am having the time of my life. The
Governor of Louisiana likes me. I never thought such a sophisticated man
would like a girl like me. I wonder if the only reason he wants to go out
with me is because he wants to go roll in the hay. If that's what he wants
to do, he had better think again. He will soon find out I am not that kind
of girl. Maybe I am just jumping to conclusions. He could be a total
gentleman. I heard he was married. I wonder if his wife knows that he dates
other girls. If I were she, I would be with him every second. If he were my
husband, he would have no reason to stray. I wonder why they don't get
along. Maybe she's an old witch with warts on her nose and no teeth. Who
knows? She can't be wonderful or he wouldn't want someone else.
He invited me to dinner, but I don't know where we are going. It will
probably be somewhere private so we won't be seen together. I am sure he
would not want someone to tell his wife that he asked a stripper to dinner.
I guess I will go and find out what will happen.

This is something most people wait a lifetime to find and some never do.

about meeting Governor Earl Long and about his invitation to have dinner with

Love,
Fannie

Bonnett Sellinger, Margie. "Past: Stripper Blaze Starr Recalls Her Affair

I will never forget him.

they are the most dangerous men of all. Later Blaze asks Earl, "Can I trust
you?" He replied "Hell no!"

JOURNAL
